Accelerating innovation in Scotland
Posted in Company News September 8, 2016
The Venturefest Network held its annual Scottish event last week, bringing innovators, entrepreneurs and investors together under one roof at the Glasgow Science Centre. Its aims were to promote business growth and offer support, as well as demonstrate that Scotland can be a world-leader in entrepreneurship and innovation. Two of our directors, Dr Andrew McGettrick and Dr Rob Gregory, attended the conference. Three highlights from the day were presentations by the following:
1. Chris van der Kuyl, 4J studios
Chris spoke powerfully about the need for companies to constantly innovate, not to rest on their laurels and not to be scared of disruptive change. Otherwise, he cautioned, brands risk losing business.
2. Charlie Rohan, NCR
Charlie took the audience through a mini-history lesson which emphasised the importance of embracing design-led thinking. It was a particularly interesting insight into what steps NCR take during the design stage of its products.
3. Google’s Digital Garage
This entertaining take on how to use digital marketing to optimise a company’s online presence was a comprehensive and practical guide. Highlighting how mobile optimisation and adding organic rich content such as video, blogs and slideshares can improve page rank, it demonstrated ways to improve a brand’s visibility online.
As well as the many sessions and workshops on offer, there was a masterclass in pitching and an exhibition allowing emerging technology companies to display their latest products.
Overall, Venturefest is an ideal platform for entrepreneurs to gain an understanding of what they need to do to succeed, and to obtain practical help and expertise to enable them to grow. Events like these are an essential part of the entrepreneurial eco-system – underpinning Scotland’s commitment to supporting innovators. There are more coming up over the next months, including Opportunity Knocks & WeAreTheFuture’s Start-up Summit, and we hope to see you there.
