Julia Li

Trainee Patent Attorney

Julia joined Hindles in May 2021 from a position as a trainee patent attorney in a large fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) company, where she previously worked as a senior scientist. She has a DPhil in Physical and Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Oxford: her research focused on the characterisation of surface active agents by neutron reflectometry at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

Within the FMCG area Julia has worked on a variety of commercial projects across a wide range of sectors including colloidal technologies, chemical compositions, chemical processes, chemical apparatus, measuring devices and polymers. She has a strong track record of securing patent protection for novel personal care products and supporting processes to take those products to market. As part of several R&D teams she has been directly involved in providing IP advice relating to several billion euro brands.

Her experience includes drafting and prosecuting global patent families with particular expertise in European patent applications, managing patent portfolios, undertaking due diligence on patent surveillance and landscaping, assisting freedom-to-operate (FTO) work for commercial launches, and proactively dealing with contentious written proceedings before the opposition divisions (ODs) of the European Patent Office (EPO).

Julia is a part-qualified patent attorney, having passed several of the exams necessary to qualify as a patent attorney.
